"Magoo was a big, playful Labrador retriever who often got himself into sticky situations..."

So begins a story in the latest description from the Aspca on foods that may be toxic to dogs. It turns out that Magoo got into the pantry and snagged himself about a pound of raisins. He ate the whole thing, of course.

The Aspca never mentions Magoo's fate. But they do tell us that as little as a handful of raisins can impair a dogs health and has been fatal for some. Ditto for the grape.

Who Knew?

Growing up, I regarded our house dogs as "the first cycle of the dishwasher". They were good about waiting their turn for whatever we left on our plates, and we weren't too implicated about gift them "people food". It never crossed our minds that our dogs health could be affected by a few measly table scraps. What was safe for us, we figured, was safe for our pets.

What's more, whenever I ate grapes, I liked to give one or two to our German Shepherd "Tiffany". The grapes always popped out of her mouth when she tried to bite into them and Tiffany, ever the good sport, refused to give up until she'd squashed each one into submission. It guaranteed at least 60 seconds of safe fun.

Tiffany was also fond of chewing gum (she chewed it -- wrapper and all -- but didn't swallow it!) We had the sugarless kind, which is often sweetened these days with xylitol.

Little did I know that I might have been poisoning our house pet! (More on xylitol below).

Why are grapes harmful?

As far as grapes and raisins go, no one is sure why they're harmful. It's been confirmed that even grapes grown without fertilizers or pesticides can be toxic to dogs. But not to every dog, and not every time. It's also not known either small amounts eaten over a long time duration could have a cumulative effect.

What we do know is that the end result in nearly all reported cases of grape or raisin toxicity is acute kidney failure. (The term "acute" means that the health is severe and comes on quickly.) The dog ultimately can't furnish urine, which means they can't filter toxins out of their systems -- a process essential to life.

During the twelve-month duration in which the effects of grapes were studied, the Aspca Animal Poison operate town handled 140 cases fascinating one or more dogs. Over a third of the dogs industrialized symptoms ranging from vomiting to kidney failure, and seven dogs died. The Aspca based their study on reported cases, so simply there may be cases where a dogs health is entirely unaffected by eating grapes. The vet will keep your dog on intravenous fluids for at least 48 hours and monitor blood chemistry daily. Normal blood work after 3 days commonly means your dog is in the clear.

Keeping a watchful eye out, of course, is the best way to keep your pet out of trouble. Like children, dogs (and other pets) have a knack for getting into mischief when we're not looking.

It's Not Just the Grapes...

There are other foods your dog should be kept away from, and some of them may surprise you.

Here are some other foods that can put a dogs health in harms way:

Chocolate

Who can resist chocolate? Like it your not, your dog.

Chocolate is made with cocoa beans and cocoa beans include a chemical called Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Separate types of chocolate have varying effects on dogs health. Dark chocolate has the largest theobromine, advent in at a whopping 450mg (compared to 1mg for white chocolate). So on Valentine's Day, you're undoubtedly being kind to your best buddy if you eat all the chocolates yourself!

Cocoa Mulch

Cocoa bean shells are a by-product of chocolate yield (which is how mulch made it into the "foods" category) and are favorite as mulch for landscaping. Homeowners like the fascinating color and scent, and the fact that the mulch breaks down into an organic fertilizer. However, some dogs like to eat it and it contains Theobromine.

Fatty foods

Fatty foods are hard for a dog to dispell and can can overtax the pancreas, prominent to pancreatitis. This can threaten your dogs health and is potentially fatal.

Nuts

Macadamia nuts should be avoided. In fact most nuts are not good for a dogs health since their high phosporus article is said to lead to bladder stones.

Mulch

Potatoes

Potato poisonings among people and dogs are rare but have occurred. The toxin, solanine, is poorly absorbed and is only found in green sprouts (these occur in tubers exposed to sunlight) and green potato skins. This explains why incidents seldom occur. Note that cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for a dogs health, undoubtedly quite nutritious and digestible.

Artificial Sweeteners

Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, especially sugarless gum and candies. Ingesting large amounts of products sweetened with xylitol may cause a sudden drop in blood sugar in dogs, resulting depression, loss of coordination, and seizures. Agreeing to Dr. Eric K. Dunayer, a consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology for the poison operate center, "These signs can produce quite rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product" states Dr. Dunayer, "...therefore, it is prominent that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately."

Turkey

Other foods listed by the Aspca as harmful:

Alcoholic beverages

Avocado (the only "fatty" member of the vegetable family)

Coffee (all forms of coffee)

Moldy or spoiled foods

Salt

Thanks to a more educated public, fewer fatalities from foods like chocolate are being reported these days. But it's prominent to keep up with what's currently known about foods and their effects on dogs health. Grapes and cocoa mulch, for example, were only discovered very recently to have harmful effects.

Below is a great method for a Garbanzo Bean Salad with a great yogurt dressing. This salad is not your usual salad and is a perfect salad to serve your family and friends. You will no doubt have many requests for your recipe. This is a great salad option for diabetics as well as anyone.

The other method is for a Bean and Bacon Salad. This method is a salad featuring green beans and bacon. It is also diabetic amiable with its use of boiled eggs, bacon, and healthy olive oil. Both of these salads are sure to spark your interest and your taste buds.

Garbanzo Bean Salad
2 cups finely shredded carrot
1 1/2 cups thinly sliced bell pepper
1 1/2 cups chopped plum tomatoes
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
2 cans (15 1/2-oz each) cans garbanzo beans, drained
12 cups salad greens

In a large bowl, integrate carrots, bell pepper, tomatoes, onion, and beans. Pour 1/2 cup of Yogurt Dressing (recipe follows) over carrot composition and toss gradually to coat. To serve place 2 cups of salad greens on a plate. Drizzle greens with 1 tbsp of the following dressing. Top with 1 1/3 cups of the vegetable mixture.

Makes 6 servings

Garbanzo Bean Salad Dressing:
1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 1/2 tsp curry powder
1/4 tsp salt, optional
1/2 tsp bottled minced garlic
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
8-oz plain fat-free yogurt
In a small bowl, integrate all ingredients using a whisk.

Bean And Bacon Salad
2 cans (16 oz each) whole green beans, drained
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 tsp salt, optional
1/4 tsp black pepper
4 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
1/4 cup light mayonnaise
1 tsp ready mustard
2 tsp vinegar
dash of salt, optional
4 slices bacon, fried crisp and crumbled
paprika for garnish

Combine beans, onions, olive oil, 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/4 tsp salt, and pepper. Toss composition lightly; cover and refrigerate.

Mix eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, 2 tsp vinegar, and dash of salt. Just before serving, drain chilled bean mixture, add the bacon and toss well. Place each serving on a lettuce leaf. Top with a spoonful of the egg composition and sprinkle with paprika for garnish.

Yield: 6 servings

Crock pots are very convenient and easy to use. The meal preparation is also quick. The cooking will take long, but you do not need to be constantly involved as there is no risk of burning the food. The climatic characteristic is very low, so the meat will not burn.

But the best about a slow cooker is that you can put in order your meal early in the morning or the old night, then go on about your day, go to work, or drive your kids around, and when you come home late in the afternoon or even early evening, evening meal will be already cooked for you. It is wonderful, it is like having a kitchen assistant, and you do not need to pay a salary.

I want to share a appetizing and healthy recipe with you.

You will need 6 chicken thighs, skin removed. You will then need 1/2 pound of white mushroom, thinly sliced. You will also need 2 medium sweet potatoes and 2 medium potatoes peeled and cubed. You will then need 2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced and 6 large shallots, peeled and halved. You can also use 4 cloves garlic if you wish. You will also need 1 cup dry wine, or if you do not like cooking with wine use some white grape juice. To season you can sue 1/2 tsp of dried rosemary and salt and pepper to taste.

Combine all ingredients except the vinegar in the slow cooker. Cover and cook. Cooking time: 5 hours in low or until potatoes are tender. Before serving stir in vinegar.

There's nothing quite like a hot bowl of chili to take the chill off your bones. When it's cold outside, you need something good and hearty to warm you up inside. But that doesn't mean you can' find a healthy evening meal formula to put in order this beloved family treat. The one I'm going to share with you, takes a itsybitsy time, but prepares sufficient for 10. It's great for serving to a small crowd but I make it for my family of five and we can verily eat on it for two days.

Heart healthy Chicken Chili
11 ounces dried white beans (pinto, navy, Great Northern)
3 sprigs fresh thyme
8 fresh parsley stems
1 bay leaf
1 tsp. Salt
2 2/3 cups water
2 tbsp. Olive oil
1 cup onions, chopped
5 cloves garlic, minced
2 ½ lbs. Boneless, skinless chicken breast, (cut into small pieces)
1 cup dry white wine (optional)
8oz. Fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 ½ cups frosty corn (no-salt added)
½ cup red bell pepper, chopped
½ cup green bell pepper, chopped
½ tsp hot pepper sauce
1 ½ tsp. Dried oregano
1 tsp. Black pepper
½ cup parsley, chopped

Directions:
1. Put pinto beans in a microwave safe 1 ½ quart casserole.
2. Bind parsley stems, bay leaf and thyme together with a string.
3. Add bound seasonings to beans along with ½ tsp of the salt and the water.
4. Cover beans and microwave on high for 30 minutes.
5. Continue cooking on medium for one hour, stirring every thirty minutes (add water as needed).
6. In a large stockpot, sauté onions and garlic in olive oil.
7. Add chicken, wine and mushrooms.
8. Cover and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes.
9. When beans are cooked, stir half into the pot with chicken.
10. Mash the remaining beans and add them to the pot.
11. Add corn, peppers, hot pepper sauce, oregano, salt and pepper.
12. Simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in chopped fresh parsley.

Serves roughly 10

There are abundance of population curious junk food right now well aware of what's in it and what it will do to their condition and body. I think a lot of population forget this. Some population fully bypass the condition issues with fast food and just eat it.

So why do they do it? They like the fast food. Sometimes they like the junk food more than they care about their health.

Two major reasons for condition issues not stopping population from buying fast food are chemicals and the environment.

There are Chemicals put in the food to make sure you come back to eat more, chemicals that are highly addictive. One example of this is high fructose corn syrup, which isn't only put in sugary foods, but of course many foods you wouldn't even think of!

The Second issue is environment.

By environment, I mean the environment some of these businesses create within their business. For example, not to pick on only them, but McDonalds has play places for children, televisions (in some) for adults, and large seating areas.

The McDonalds in my area of course compares to a restaurant. It has fancy lighting and very comfortable seats and so on.

Additionally, for some, taking the kids out to eat is the only house time they can of course get. It's the only environment where there is a lack of stress (sans dietary/chemical). I can of course sympathize with this although it's on the sad side. I believe anything can recreate their life to the point where they are able to provide a determined and nourishing environment for not only themselves, but also those they care about.

The point I am trying to make is that junk food isn't only about the taste of the food. There are many basic reasons for why you or someone else eats it.

The solution is simple.

These clubs are just satisfying the demand. As long as the American population and the population of this world query fast food, it will be served. But if you take a stand, and query wholesome food, and query that they improve their business, their service, they must.

The whole one goal of a corporation is to make a profit. If the query is for wholesome food, it will be satisfied.

Now I want to say this before continuing;  Nikki is still beautiful, but her condition is failing fast, and I can't help but think that it's been brought on by the crap in the cans that the big dog food manufacturers insist is "healthy and nutritious dog food".

I can't prove it, but it seems obvious to me, that the dog food associates could care less what they are providing to us as cusine for our dogs, inspecting what we've learned recently about the ingredients they use in what they produce.

Another thing that for real bugs me is; The Veterinarians we trusted our pet's condition to endorse many of these garbage products on the market.

So what can we do about it?

Well, all I can tell you is what I have done about it.

Several weeks ago, I made up my mind that I was going to go to the extra endeavor and expense,(although there's not much extra price involved), and feed our dog Nikki food that contains ingredients that I have trust in.

In other words; I made up my mind that our dog would have food made from salutary homemade dog food recipes at home in our own kitchen.

The outcome of this decision is that I will know exactly what she's eating. I will no longer have to wonder and worry about what the big dog food manufacturers are hiding about the ingredients they put in their canned and dry food.

That fact has been proved, in the recent dog food scares and recalls, and all the reports we've read and heard after looking out they were poisoning our dogs with unreliable and unregulated ingredients from foreign suppliers.

My conclusion is simple: If I can't trust the associates who claim to know what's good for my dog, then I'll take their job into my own hands.

It's like all things else in this life; You get what you pay for, you reap what you sow...
